Market Mornings in Ruffec
Fresh, organic bread, fragrant, colourful stalls and the easy pleasure of a delicious coffee after the market. This is one of my favourite ways to slow down and start a Saturday in Charente.

It pays to get up nice and early to get to the market before the crowds in Ruffec. There is also a market every Wednesday too but the Saturday market in Ruffec is my favourite.

Although it is only a relatively small town, Ruffec has a thriving commercial life with many small independent shops and a busy commercial area on the outskirts of town. From clothing, DIY, brocantes, hairdressers, florists and gift shops, you can actually get everything you need here. It’s easy to see why Ruffec is being hailed as the small town of tomorrow and we have many clients at TIC Immobilier who are now looking to live in the town as opposed to the remote countryside.
As I arrive in Ruffec, the streets are already alive with the gentle vibe of market day. Stallholders are arranging colourful fruit and vegetables, some organic just outside the market. I love wandering about and bumping into neighbours and friends and the cafés are a great place to stop to chat over coffee.

This isn’t somewhere to rush.
The best mornings are spent wandering without a plan, discovering what’s in season and chatting to local producers. One week it might be perfectly ripe tomatoes and fragrant herbs, the next it’s local cheeses, fresh fish from Ile d’Oleron or a basket of sun-ripened peaches that simply couldn’t be left behind.

It’s these little moments that I love most.
The market isn’t just somewhere to shop—it’s where the town comes together.

Time for Coffee
No visit to Ruffec feels complete without lingering over a coffee afterwards.

One of my favourite things about market mornings is watching the town slowly settle into the weekend. Friends meet on café terraces, cyclists stop for breakfast and shoppers compare their morning finds before heading home.
There’s no hurry.
It’s one of those wonderfully French moments that reminds you life doesn’t always have to move at full speed.
A Few Tips
If you’re planning your own visit…
- Arrive early for the best produce.
- Bring a shopping basket or reusable bag.
- Allow plenty of time afterwards for coffee.
- Don’t worry if you don’t buy much, the atmosphere is reason enough to visit.
Why I Keep Coming Back

Katie’s Favourites
The smiley strawberry seller just outside. Amazing organic bread and vegetables from La Ferme du Mas and the best fresh fish from wonderfully friendly sellers direct from la Cotiniere.
Perfect companion: A warm croissant and a café crème
Photo opportunity: The colourful market stalls and flower displays
Every market is slightly different depending on the season, and perhaps that’s why I never tire of Ruffec.
Some mornings I come home with bags full of local produce.
Other times I leave with nothing more than a coffee, fresh bread and an hour well spent.
Either way, I always leave feeling a little happier than when I arrived.
